Make It: Lemon-Infused Sugar

Thursday is here! One of our favorite days. Why, you ask? Well the weekend is nearly here, a wonderful week is behind us, and The Office is on tv. Ooh, and Aleah’s heading to a West Elm event! What better way to spend a Thursday evening? Alas, we’ll also be prepping some fantastic details for our Hotel Del Coronado wedding this weekend. That’s a great combination, if you ask us!

So, as you may or may not know, we’re all about leading an inspired life at home – with simple and effortless tricks and wonderful things that pack an impact. We know that people are busy. Lives can be chaotic. So why not spruce up daily elements so that they’re sweet and unexpected? So that they make you smile.

Growing up baking was a big part of family life for us both. Nick’s grandma Kay would bake fresh Washington apple pies and apple sauces and jams. Aleah has memories of her parents {who to this still day make this every visit home} baking up warm plum tortes with plums plucked from the garden, and pumpkin pies, Parisian wafers, and delicious delights galore. Baking is often a ritual for holidays and it’s a way to warm the kitchen and your home. This lemon-infused sugar DIY was intended to be that sweet punch; something zesty you can use to dress up tea or sugar cookies. Also use it to make a zesty simple syrup: simply bring about 1/2 a cup of this sugar in 1 cup or so of water {add more if needed} to a boil and bring down to a simmer until it’s thick. It also makes for a charming gift or take-home favor.

You’ll need: the zest of 2 lemons per container | canning jars | C & H Sugar | potato peeler | ribbon

Zest about 2 lemons with a potato peeler per container into a glass or bowl and set aside.

Important step: let the lemon peels dry out for a few hours or even overnight. If you skip this step your sugar can become really dewy with the moisture.

Once they’re dry insert a few into a canning jar and pour sugar about halfway to the top of the jar.

Then add more lemon peels and then more sugar. Top with a layer of peels.

Then seal the jar up and cinch with a springtime ribbon.

Done! Pretty sweet, right? Are you as excited for spring and baking projects to come in this fresh season?
