Make It: Striped Ceramic Coasters

It’s Friday! What’s on your schedule for the weekend? We’re looking forward to some most excellent meetings with clients to wrap their upcoming wedding details, relaxing, and soaking in the elements around us. Hopefully we’ll take a beach stroll to collect those coveted coffee bean shells. Maybe we’ll grab some gelato in the Village, too. Ooh, and catching up on some new movies and enjoying popcorn sounds like a plan! Whatever you do, hopefully it’s rewarding: either in the form of gardening, relaxing, rejuvenating, crafting, or being surrounded by those you love.

If you are crafting away or looking for a fun way to spend the afternoon, check out some of our DIY projects {we’re all about attainable ideas that make an impact} or this painted striped ceramic coaster project. We think you’ll enjoy the results!

You’ll need: white ceramic tiles {we found these at Home Depot for $.16/each} | a sponge brush | painter’s tape | paint | thin cork sheet {at a fabric store for about $3/sheet} | clear coat enamel

Place painter’s tape on tiles, wrapping the paint around the sides, to the width you desire. We made some horizontal and some diagonal for fun.

Paint two coats of ceramic paint {or an all-purpose craft paint that works on tile} on your tiles pretty thick. We like to use a sponge brush as they don’t leave brush lines.

Once dry carefully remove the tape.

Spray your tiles with a coat of clear coat enamel. Let dry and repeat. This secures the paint and ensures it won’t scratch and adds a nice shine.

For the next step you’ll need think cork cut to cover the back of your tiles {size of tiles dependent, but about 2 3/4″ x 2 3/4} and adhere with tacky glue to reduce scratching surfaces.
Cover the back with a heavy dose of glue.
Cinch up with some kitchen twine and you’re ready to give the gift of cuteness. Or use them in your own home painted with vibrant colors like sunflower, lemon, or cherry red. Go neutral with taupes and mochas for a warm feeling and use them to enjoy your morning cup of Joe. Paint them in sweet pastels for spring-inspired gifts or wedding favors: gift one per family or couple.
What colors would you paint these tiles? Something subtle or would you go crazy with color?
