Make It: Indoor Orchid Terrarium

How was your weekend? Hopefully enjoyable and relaxing! While we had a cheery weekend in San Diego with warm temperatures and clear skies {usually the first two weeks in January are gorgeous}, we know that some rainy days are ahead, which we’ll welcome. Much of our weekend was spent prepping for some Monday shoots we hope inspire: think more fresh-inspired cocktails, DIY projects, and spring inspiration. We did manage to relax a bit as well unwinding with a movie night {we started at 6pm!} with back-to-back fun, movie candy, and popcorn. Boy, did it feel good to totally shut off. We need to make a point to do that more often.

So as we shoot away and craft some new projects and as Mr. Valley whips up some refreshing spirits for you, please enjoy our orchid terrarium project. Make your own orchid terrarium to brighten those gloomy winter days. The pops of vibrancy will give you some solice as we lead into spring and count down the days to the crocuses blooming, birds chirping, and the freshness that a change in seasons brings.

You’ll need: an 8″ wide round vase | 2 small orchid plants | black sand | black rocks | Spanish moss

Fill your cylinder with about an inch of black sand.

Remove the little orchids from their ceramic containers but leave them in their plastic as this keeps their roots nice and snug and in tact.

Add a bit more sand and black rocks to nestle the plants in place.

Top the plants with Spanish moss around the base so you cover the roots.
There you have it: your own little indoor tropical paradise. This would also make a sweet hostess or neighborly gift. Tend to your orchids by keeping them in a warm and humid space like a bathroom. Water with warm water and orchid food.

So are you longing for the fresh days of spring or enjoying the winter that’s set in?
