Effortless Entertaining: A Sweet Valentine’s Day Breakfast

It’s that time, friends…well, it’s Friday for one. Time is also inching closer to Valentine’s Day! While many of you are likely digging out of inches upon inches of fluffy white snow {or perhaps slush by now}, we’re looking ahead to Cupid’s arrow and to longer days, warmer afternoons, and to seeing buds popping up reminding us all that spring is worth the long winter’s wait…to us mid-January has always been the time of year when we yearn to open up the windows, let the light stream in, and get outside to planting in our incredible yard back in Seattle. Our garden was just crying to get some love after a long cold winter. It was also when we got excited to plot out spring holidays, entertaining, and virtually any excuse to throw a party or get together with our friends and families.

There’s nothing quite like entertaining {whether for two, for a dozen, or for a hundred} with unexpected elements that make your guests say wow, what a cool idea. So while we all look ahead to the warmer days of spring we encourage you to think creatively. For our little Valentine’s Day breakfast we kept it effortless with sweet touches. If you’ve been following us for long you know that part of our jobs consists of designing styling tables for a living: for magazine work, for inspiration, and most often for our clients and their incredible events. So we love really jazzing up a table to make it pop. To make it grand, and to make it incredible. But we also enjoy creating simple vignettes that you can make with virtually anything on hand, with just a little creativity. For this breakfast idea we ran with a neutral color wheel but punched up the visual with textures and patterns and a single pink bloom on each place setting.
To dress up place settings: you’ll need: 4 tiles for each place setting | French-inspired plates | white bistro napkins or tea towels | snippets of fabric {cut to about 6″ x 12″ | lace {cut to 4″ x 12″} | vintage spoons | patterned glasses | simple blooms | tacky glue | 20″ of rope | large buttons {one for each place setting}

Create a place mat, or charger of sorts, with tile. Here we used soap stone tiles {about $2 a piece} from Home Depot.
Map it out and lay 4 down – or you can even make a rectangular shape or a table “runner.”

Anchor the setting with your plate front and center.
Take your fabric and wrap around the middle of each napkin like a belly band.
Take your lace and wrap it atop the fabric band.
Use tacky glue to adhere the fabric and lace {a big dab should do it – you want to be able to slip the bands off easily}.
 Tie your rope around the lace and fabric band and cinch with a simple knot.
Top your plate with a lovely pink bloom, a simple decorative glass, and a buttom and you’re ready to enjoy a relaxed morning. Or how amazing would these place settings look at a wedding? Really, talk about a unique setting that would be stunning when replicated down numerous tables.
Doesn’t the button add a nice finishing touch?
Simple, yet entirely charming and sweet.
