DIY: Metallic Striped Trays

It’s Monday and it’s Halloween! Happy Halloween to you! We hope you have a spooky night planned! How incredible that this time of year has come again so quickly. Our home is decked out with festive carved pumpkins with crookedy grins and scars and some creepy spiderwebs and we’re ready for trick-or-treaters. In San Diego the days are still beautifully warm but the nights are crisper and there’s a disctinct scent in the air by our house: the salty sea mixed with smoke from burning fireplaces and the chilly air, which makes us feel at home!
As the holidays inch closer so quickly we’re dreaming up fun holiday recipes and DIY projects that will dress up your table, parties, and gifts in the sweetest ways. Our metallic striped trays are a perfect place to start when you’re plotting your holiday decor: they’re utterly festive and can act as serving trays {with a paper liner}, chargers, or as hostess gifts.
We created these for our New Year’s Eve entertaining spread in the December issue of San Diego Magazine, so stay tuned for the full spread in a few weeks! We wanted to create something that can easily dress up a place setting or party while being simpel to make.
Here’s what you need:
Plastic trays in whatever color you’d like {we used black and white} – we got ours from Target for $2 a piece! | metallic everyday spray paint in gold or silver | 1″ blue painter’s tape {or smaller or wider depending on how big you want your stripes} | a guitar pick

Take your tray and start from one edge taping the painter’s tape from the left side to the right, holding tape tight as to not make any bubbles. Continue to make stripes as skinny or fat as you like. Smooth each stripe with a guitar pick. Warning: if you skip this step the paint can seep under the tape.

Take your trays outside and lay flat on packing paper. Spray lightly from about 6″ away covering the tray evenly.
Let the paint dry and cure before you bring it back indoors.
Gently pull the tape off holding the tray firm {be sure to pull the tape straight up}.
Voilà!
There you have it! The perfect dazzling touch to your holiday entertaining repertoire.
Tell us: will you be replicating our DIY for the holidays? If so, what color combination will you use?
