Entertaining at Home: Our Farmers’ Market Fete

We’re so excited to see our Famers’ Market Fête in print in the September issue of San Diego Magazine, which means fall is just around the corner. Oh, my! Well, we have a plan for this next changing of the seasons: embracing! We’re going to enjoy each and every bit and the goodness that comes along with it, starting with fresh market finds!

For this shoot our concept was a fun party literally plucked straight from your favorite farmers’ market. Using the best meats and cheeses, brown speckled eggs, and fresh ingredients as accent decor, treat your guests to a feast of fresh recipes from the farmers themselves.

Mix and match elements like old bobbins and weathered tins as accent pieces and utilize bok choy and corn to dress your place settings.

Make It: Whisknladle Fresh Market Salad

• 4 ears of corn, grilled, shucked, and
corn cut off the cob (we get our corn
from Chino Farm, open to the public)

• 4 whole grapefruit, with peel and pith
cut off and segmented

• 4 hearts of palm, sliced thin on the
bias (Specialty Produce has a great
fresh product from Costa Rica)

• 4 celery stalks, peeled and sliced thin
on the bias

• 2 ripe avocados, halved, pitted,
cubed, and scooped out of the skin

• 3 cups fresh arugula (arugula sylvetta,
or wild arugula, is great for this salad)

•1/8 cup extra virgin olive oil
Squeeze of fresh lemon or splash of a favorite vinegar like white balsamic, Xeres sherry, or vincotto
Toss all the vegetables together, dress with the oil and citrus or vinegar, season well with salt and pepper, and serve in a large bowl topped with shaved hard cheese such as mimolette or Grana Padana.

…if you don’t feel like making this at home you must visit Whisknladle in La Jolla at 1044 Wal Street. Their food is incredible and the environment is really laid-back and fun. Tell them you saw our piece!

The September issue in all its glory!

Stay tuned tomorrow for more bonus images and recipes, entertaining tips, and our funky play list!

There is nothing quite like purchasing from your local farmers market and taking it home to prepare for guests- I think it all tastes better that way. Thanks for a lovely post.
