Entertaining at Home: Bonus Market Fresh Recipes

Yesterday we shared a deliciously fresh market salad recipe from Whisknladle from our September Famers’ Market Fête for San Diego Magazine. Today we’re back with an utterly incredible fresh berry pudding {yeah, we thought you’d like it!} and our market bash playlist. When you’re envisioning your own fresh market celebration, it’s all about the ingredients. From the tasty dishes you serve up to the table top elements, using goodies you just bought from a market stall will really bring your entire theme together.Berries, corn, and rustic baguettes mix well with elements like dishes and blooms. Pulling together this ambiance is so much fun and it really is a treat for your guests. Then there’s the music….

Anyone who knows us knows that we love a good playlist {seriously, Aleah is a contender for having the most random playlist on the planet. Though the level of goodness could be debated}. For each of our columns we have the fun task of picking bits and pieces of our favorite music that we know San Diego Magazine readers will enjoy and might be new to them. Our market play list is eclectic and funky and reminds Aleah of late fall evenings back on the her family’s island and the turning of the leaves. Since the leaves don’t turn in San Diego, this mix will do and it certainly gets us in the mood for fall!

..and a bonus recipe you must try:
Whisknladle’s Fresh Berry Pudding
1 loaf
Bread and Cie Pullman Bread(Brioche or Challah can be substituted)
1 #
Strawberries
2 pints
Raspberries
2 pints
Blackberries
2 pints
Blueberries
1 cup
Sugar
Zest and juice of 1
Lemon
·         Reserve a small amount of each type of berry to use for garnish
·         Dessert needs to be made 24 hours in advance
To make Berry Compote:
In a medium sized pot combine remaining berries, sugar, lemon juice and a pinch of salt.
Bring up to a boil and then simmer over low heat for about 20 minutes until berries break down and a nice sauce forms.  When finished reserve 1 cup of compote and then strain the rest.
To build Pudding:
Remove crusts from bread and cut in to ½ inch slices.  Line a large loaf pan or medium sized bowl with plastic wrap so that there is enough overhang to completely wrap the pudding when assembled. Spread one third of strained berry compote over the bottom of the mold.  Line with one layer of bread.  Repeat with another layer of compote, then bread and then the last layer of compote.  Gather plastic and wrap pudding tightly.  If using a bowl, put a plate over the pudding then weigh down with a couple of full cans.  If using a loaf pan just weigh down with cans. Place in the fridge and weigh down over night allowing the compote to completely soak in to the bread.
To serve:
Unmold pudding and slice or scoop out 8-10 portions.  Top each piece with reserved berry compote and some fresh berries.  Serve with lightly sweetened whipped cream and fresh mint.
